SUMMARY:The Impact of Culturally Competent Cancer Care
DESCRIPTION:Attention all health care and non-profit professionals! Sharsheret’s The Impact of Culturally Competent Cancer Care is a one hour training webinar about the importance of culturally competent care for cancer patients. Not simply the politically correct thing to do\, or something kind during a difficult time\, this type of care has a proven impact on survivorship. The training explores the issues through the example of Jewish women facing breast cancer. The training includes topics such as the diversity of the Jewish community\, increased hereditary risk for Jewish women\, and cultural\, religious and spiritual issues that may impact detection\, treatment or survivorship. Woven throughout the presentation will be examples of how this information is relevant to many other communities. Participants will also learn about the free resources Sharsheret can provide to all breast and ovarian cancer patients. \nFree CE credit may be available through ASWB\, NYSW\, ANCC\, and ACCME. \nRegister here. \nContact Melissa Rosen\, Director of Training and Education\, with any questions.

SUMMARY:Highlights from ASCO 2023
DESCRIPTION:Highlights from the latest findings from the American Society of Clinical Oncology’s Annual Meeting with Dr. Yuan Yuan\, PhD\, Director\, Breast Oncology\, Medical Director\, Cedars-Sinai Comprehensive Cancer Institute and Dr. BJ Rimel\, MD\, Associate Professor\, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology\, Cedars-Sinai. \nRegister now \nFor questions please contact Bonnie Beckoff \nThank you to our generous sponsors: \n   \nDr. Yuan Yuan\, MD\, PhD\, is a breast medical oncologist and physician scientist who specializes in triple-negative breast cancer and breast cancer immunotherapy Yuan\, whose training includes a fellowship in hematology and medical oncology at New York University Medical Center and a rotation at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York\, received her medical degree in China and holds a PhD in biochemistry and molecular biology from the University of California\, Riverside. Yuan’s research focus is triple-negative breast cancer\, a fast-growing and often aggressive form of the disease.   To that end\, Yuan’s research aims to expand the number of triple-negative breast cancer patients who can benefit from immune checkpoint inhibitors—a number that currently stands at just 30 percent. She and her team are testing a novel immunotherapy combination to turn “immune-cold” tumors\, which cannot be penetrated by the body’s immune system\, into “immune-hot” tumors that readily respond to immunotherapies. She is also working closely with the Cedars-Sinai cell therapy team to bring first-in-class immunotherapy treatments to patients with solid tumors\, including breast cancers. Yuan\, who most recently served as medical director of breast cancer immunotherapy at City of Hope\, speaks Mandarin and places patient care front and center. \nDr. BJ Rimel\, MD graduated cum laude with distinction in research from the University of Rochester in Rochester\, New York\, with a bachelor’s degree in microbiology and immunology. She completed her medical school education at Duke University School of Medicine in Durham\, North Carolina\, and her residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Northwestern University\, Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago. This was followed by a fellowship in Gynecologic Oncology completed at Washington University St. Louis. Recruited to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in August 2011 to work on gynecologic oncology clinical trials\, Dr. Rimel’s research interests focus on barriers to clinical trial enrollment and the use of digital processes to improve access and comprehension of clinical trials. Dr Rimel is the gynecology surgeon for the Cedars-Sinai Transgender program. Dr. Rimel is also the Medical Director of the Cancer Clinical Trials Office. Dr. Rimel is the Co-Chair of the very successful LGBTQ+ Cancer Symposium in June 2022 which brought together local and national clinician-researchers and thought leaders to discuss prevention\, detection and cancer care for the LGBTQ+ community.

SUMMARY:Beyond Surviving: How Tools from Lifestyle Medicine Can Empower Survivors\, Thrivers\, and Those Living with Cancer
DESCRIPTION:Maya Angelou said\, “My mission in life is not merely to survive\, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion\, some compassion\, some humor\, and some style.” This is a great sentiment to kick off Cancer Survivor Month\, which provides an opportunity to recognize cancer survivors\, thrivers\, and those living with cancer. During this interactive webinar participants will learn how to “thrive” and not just “survive\,” by focusing on the 6 pillars of lifestyle medicine: physical activity\, healthy eating\, restorative sleep\, stress management\, avoidance of risky substances\, and the power of personal connections. Participants will learn how tools from lifestyle medicine can optimize health\, well-being\, and outcome from cancer. Our expert is Dr. Amy Comander\, a breast oncologist and lifestyle medicine expert. \nBonus for our Embrace Community: We invite members of our Embrace community\, those facing metastatic breast or advanced ovarian cancer\, to stay on at the end of the webinar for an intimate breakout session with Dr. Comander and conversation with Bonnie Beckoff\, Director of Support Services. \nDr. Amy Comander is a breast oncologist and lifestyle medicine expert at the Massachusetts General Cancer Center. Dr. Comander is Director of Breast Oncology and Cancer Survivorship at the Mass General Cancer Center in Waltham and at Newton Wellesley Hospital. SUMMARY:Narrative Storytelling for Cancer Thrivers
DESCRIPTION:After a cancer diagnosis\, people navigate both hard-fought victories and stories of pain and loss in their journeys. SUMMARY:Life\, Love and the BRCA Mutation
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Women’s Healthcare Month with Jessica Queller as she sits down with Rabbi Sherre Hirsch and shares her journey of inheriting the BRCA1 mutation and how it changed her life forever.\n\nRegister for the webinar at this link.\n\nEleven months after her mother succumbs to cancer\, Jessica Queller has herself tested for the BRCA gene mutation. The results come back positive\, putting her at a terrifyingly elevated risk of developing breast cancer before the age of 50 and ovarian cancer in her lifetime. Thirty-four\, unattached\, and yearning for marriage and a family of her own\, Queller faces an agonizing choice: a lifetime of vigilant screenings and a commitment to fight the disease when caught\, or its radical alternative—a prophylactic double mastectomy that would effectively restore life to her\, even as it would challenge her most closely held beliefs about body image\, identity\, and sexuality. In conversation with AJUs Catherine Schneider and Sharsheret’s Jenna Fields\, Jessica offers insights from her journey and shares helpful tools on how to educate yourself\, get tested\, and share this lifesaving information with your loved ones. \nOne in 40 Ashkenazi Jews – both men and women – carries a BRCA gene mutation\, nearly 10 times the rate of the general population\, making Jewish families significantly more susceptible to hereditary breast cancer and ovarian cancer. Recent studies show that Sephardic Jews may also be genetically predisposed to hereditary breast and ovarian cancer. If you or someone in your family has tested BRCA+\, whether you have been diagnosed with breast or ovarian cancer\, Sharsheret can help. \nThis program is delivered in partnership with American Jewish University and Sharsheret.

SUMMARY:Sleep\, Fatigue and Circadian Rhythms in Cancer: Their effect on quality of life
DESCRIPTION:Sleep disturbances and fatigue are both very common in cancer and get worse during chemotherapy. These symptoms can last for years after the end of treatment. Cancer patients get very little bright light exposure during cancer treatment which is related to increased fatigue and poor sleep.  New research suggests that increased bright light exposure helps fatigue\, sleep\, depression and biological rhythms. This non-invasive treatment has the potential for improving quality of life in cancer patients. Join our webinar and learn more about what this means for you. Featuring Sonia Ancoli-Israel\, Ph.D.\, Professor Emeritus and Professor of Research\, Department of Psychiatry and the Center of Circadian Biology\, UCSD School of Medicine. \n\nBonus for our Embrace Community: We invite members of our Embrace community\, those facing metastatic breast or advanced ovarian cancer\, to stay on at the end of the webinar for an intimate breakout session with Dr. Anocoli-Israel and conversation with Bonnie Bekoff\, Director of Support Services. \n\nClick here to register \n\nSonia Ancoli-Israel\, Ph.D. is a Professor Emeritus and Professor of Research in the Department of Psychiatry and the Center of Circadian Biology at the University of California San Diego (UCSD) School of Medicine.
