SUMMARY:Healthcare Professional Training: Simple Coping Mechanisms to Reduce Cancer-Related Stress in Patients
DESCRIPTION:Sharsheret’s free\, one-hour training\, Simple Coping Mechanisms to Reduce Cancer-related Stress in Patients is an interactive training that explores imagery and metaphors to assist patients with the anxiety that commonly accompanies diagnoses\, treatment\, and survivorship.  These tools\, meant to be shared with patients\, are intentionally familiar\, and easily recalled\, to be used during moments of unexpected stress\, to allow the patient to reframe their thoughts surrounding a particular concern. While these tools are not meant as a replacement for ongoing therapy for those who need\, they do allow for a non-threatening introduction to the topic of mental health. DESCRIPTION:Join Sharsheret’s Israel Office in partnership with the Israel Cancer Research Fund(ICRF) for exciting breast cancer research updates with Dr. Albert Grinshpun\, MD\, MSc. Dr. Grinshpun’s ICRF-funded research is changing the way doctors can monitor cancer treatments\, using a simple blood test or “liquid biopsy.” Moderated by Liora Tannenbaum\, Sharsheret’s Israel Region Director\,  this webinar will provide updates on this research and other advances in breast cancer research coming out of Israel.\n\nRegister here.\n\nPlease contact Bonnie Beckoff with any questions or for more information.\n\n\n\nExpert Bio:\n\nDr. Albert Grinshpun completed his M.D. at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem\, Israel in 2010. During his M.D. he also completed M.Sc. in gene therapy. Then\, he went on and completed his service in the Israel Defense Forces\, followed by a residency in Medical Oncology at the Sharett Institute of Oncology of the Hadassah-Hebrew University Medical Center\, Jerusalem. \nDuring training\, Albert accomplished a basic research fellowship at the Weizmann Institute where he investigated tumor microbiome. Notably\, while being a resident\, Albert won several highly prestigious competitive grants including the Ministry of Science Personalized Medicine grant\, Physician-Scientist award from the Israel Science Foundation (ISF)\, and the Conquer Cancer (ASCO)-Israel Cancer Research Fund Career Development Award. \nAfter completion of his training\, Dr. Grinshpun joined the international Goldfarb Advanced Fellowship program in Medical Oncology at Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center in Boston. Albert studied mechanisms of endocrine resistance in metastatic hormone receptor-positive breast cancer and ctDNA studies\, mentored by Drs. Lin and Jeselsohn of Dana-Farber. In parallel\, Albert was involved in translational research\, clinical trial design and multidisciplinary patient care. \nDr. Grinshpun has published more than 40 peer reviewed original articles. Among these publications are manuscripts published in Annals of Oncology and JAMA Oncology. \nIn August 2023 Albert returned to Israel and currently he’s leading the Breast Oncology Service at Shaare Zedek Medical Center\, Jerusalem. In addition\, Albert is leading a research team focused on Women’s cancers\, affiliated to the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

Her knowledge of the complex rules that employers\, insurers and medical providers follow\, as well as the dynamics and incentives that exist between stakeholders helps her give the women she supports a constructive and comprehensive foundation so that they can integrate all available information with comfort and confidence and focus on recovery and wellness. Rebecca is also a professional storytelling coach\, helping her clients get their stories told and shared. He was an undergraduate at UCLA where he was involved with early laboratory studies investigating the HER2 oncogene and the development of monoclonal antibodies to this target in breast cancer with Dr. Dennis Slamon. He participated in the pre-clinical studies that defined the clinical candidate that eventually humanized and became the FDA approved agent trastuzumab (Herceptin). He went on to medical school at USC then returned to UCLA for his clinical training in Internal Medicine and then Hematology/ Oncology. \nHe currently splits his time between patient care and directing the Translational Research Laboratory in the Division of Hematology/Oncology. His research interests are focused in the development of targeted therapeutics for solid tumors across histologies to support the larger efforts of the department. His personal interests lie in the development of these targeted agents in Hepato-biliary and breast cancers. He has two-half days dedicated to patient care\, one of which is as a leader in the multi-disciplinary hepato-biliary cancer program at UCLA where he is involved with clinical studies aimed at bringing novel therapeutics into the treatment of patients with these malignancies.

He takes his time to understand symptoms and give correct diagnoses to ensure the continued health of all his patients. \n  \n \n\n\n\n\nDr. Darren Bryk’s is a urologist who’s expertise spans the full spectrum of men’s wellness.  He currently works as a urologist for Urology Medical Specialists in South Florida. Dr. Bryk completed his undergraduate education at NYU College of Arts and Science\, received his MD from NYU School of Medicine\, completed residency at the Cleveland Clinic and an Andrology Fellowship at the University of Virginia. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Bryk is diligent in connecting with every single one of his patients\, which he believes is the best way to provide excellent care and achieve successful outcomes. Dr. Bryk works to provide comprehensive treatment strategies to his patients that include education on the issue\, behavioral and mental health options and medication and surgery if needed. He belives the doctor-patient partnership is of utmost importance. \n  \n\n\nPeggy Cottrell\, MS\, CGC\, Genetics Program Manager\, is a graduate of the Sarah Lawrence College Master of Science in Genetic Counseling program. Joanna has spent more than thirty years working on behalf of individuals with cancer\, including five as an Adjunct Professor of Law at Loyola Law School\, teaching a seminar in Cancer Rights Law\, and eight at the John Wayne Cancer Institute’s Psychosocial Care Program and Positive Appearance Center. She has also taught a Community Advocacy Clinic\, as an Adjunct Professor of Law at Wayne State University Law School. Joanna co-authored the book\, Cancer Rights Law\, for the American Bar Association – the first and only book of its kind. The second edition of Cancer Rights Law was released in 2025. In 2020\, she wrote a chapter Cancer-Related Legal Issues\, for the Oncology Nursing Society’s book\, Oncology Nurse Navigation: Delivering Patient-Centered Care Across the Continuum. In 2017\, she wrote Preventing or Minimizing Financial Toxicity Across the Continuum of Cancer Care\, a chapter for the Oncology Nursing Society’s book\, Cancer Survivorship: Transdisciplinary\, Patient-Centered Approaches to the Season of Survival. In 2009\, she also contributed to a book entitled\, Work and Cancer Survivors. And\, her work has appeared in a variety of other publications\, such as Psycho-Oncology\, Heal\, CURE\, and Coping with Cancer. Joanna earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science with an emphasis in International Relations from the University of California Los Angeles and a Juris Doctor from Loyola Law School Los Angeles. She has also received the American Cancer Society Leadership in Oncology Navigation (ACS LION) Certificate and the ACS LION Clinical Trials Navigation Certificate.

SUMMARY:The Power Between the Words: Finding Meaning in the Darkness
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the third in our series of processing the cancer experience through creative writing. Poet Hadara Ben-Nadav is known for her unique blackout poetry. She can take a document\, artfully remove the majority of the words\, and create an entirely new piece. By taking something scary and overwhelming\, such as an article about cancer\, and removing the majority of the words\, we can reveal something empowering hidden in the larger story. \nWe’ll provide several written pieces to work with\, or feel free to bring your own. \nRegister here. \nQuestions?
