For the first 30 years of her career\, Kristen traveled the world\, documenting some of the biggest news stories of our time. She reported for NBC Nightly News and NBC’s Today show\, was nominated for an Emmy award for leading the network’s coverage of the Parkland School shooting\, served as a backup anchor for Lester Holt\, and won an Edward R. Murrow award for her feature reporting. In 2019\, she was diagnosed with Breast Cancer and immediately decided to share her story to help other women to recognize the different ways their own cancers could present. Through her reporting\, Kristen also learned about the research that was happening on Breast Cancer vaccines. After a conversation with UW Cancer Vaccine Institute’s Dr. Nora Disis\, Kristen realized that vaccines for breast cancer were no longer a “Pie in the sky” idea but something that was close and achievable. She couldn’t stand by and watch anyone else suffer. CVC is partnered with the nation’s top vaccine and cancer researchers with a goal of getting a safe\, effective breast cancer vaccine to market in 5 to 10 years. CVC has one mission: to move science forward faster. To do so\, CVC works to fund trials\, streamline the process\, remove barriers to success and ensure ALL breast cancer patients are represented in trials. \nDr. Kiran Dhillon has a PhD in Genetics from the University of Washington and then studied chemotherapy resistance in BRCA1/2-associated breast and ovarian cancers at the Fred Hutch Cancer Center. She then joined the Rivkin Center as Director of Scientific Programs\, where she oversaw an international ovarian cancer research grants program\, scientific symposia\, and content for a breast and ovarian cancer education program. Currently\, Dr. Dhillon is the Executive Director at the Cancer Vaccine Institute at the University of Washington\, the largest academic institution devoted to the development of cancer vaccines. As ED she directs the overall strategic program goals and general administration of the Institute to accelerate the development of therapeutic and preventative vaccines for some of the most common and deadly cancers\, including breast and ovarian cancers. \nSusan M. Domchek\, MD is the Basser Professor in Oncology at the Perelman School of Medicine of the University of Pennsylvania. She serves as Executive Director of the Basser Center for BRCA at the Abramson Cancer Center and Director of the Mariann and Robert MacDonald Cancer Risk Evaluation Program. \nHer work focuses on the genetic evaluation and medical management of individuals with inherited risk factors for cancer. Dr. Domchek is particularly interested in developing new cancer therapies\, such as PARP inhibitors\, for breast cancer due to genetic risk factors. \nAn elected member of the National Academy of Medicine\, the American Society of Clinical Investigation\, and the Association of American Physicians\, Dr. Domchek is also a Fellow of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (FASCO). A significant contributor to the oncology literature\, she has authored/co-authored more than 350 articles appearing in scholarly journals including the New England Journal of Medicine\, the Journal of the American Medical Association and the Journal of Clinical Oncology. Dr. Cohen is an expert in the surgical cytoreduction of cancer and in the use of minimally invasive surgical techniques\, including robotic surgery. He values the opportunity to perform cancer surgery and oversee systemic treatment\, developing a personalized treatment plan for each patient. Dr. Cohen provides a comprehensive approach to the management of gynecologic cancers including patients with genetic predispositions to these cancers. One of Dr. Cohen’s main goals is for his patients to have the tools to be actively engaged in their medical decisions\, in a supportive environment\, to maximize cancer care and quality of life. \nA member of Sharsheret’s Western Region Community Advisory Committee and the 2024 Sharsheret West Coast Dash Grand Marshal\, Josh has lent his expertise to the Sharsheret community for the past 5 years. He has been recognized by Los Angeles Magazine as one of L.A.’s Top Doctors and a Southern California Super Doctor. As Medical Director of the Gynecologic Cancer Program at the Lennar Foundation Cancer Center at City of Hope Orange County\, he aims to ensure patients facing ovarian\, endometrial\, cervical\, vulvar\, and vaginal cancer receive world-class care. \nDr. Cohen attended medical school at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. He completed his residency in obstetrics and gynecology at the University of California\, San Francisco\, where he received multiple awards including outstanding teaching resident. He then pursued a fellowship in gynecologic oncology at UCLA and Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. Dr. Cohen has led significant efforts in gynecologic cancer research and completed the Clinical Research Training Program at the National Institutes of Health\, as well as the Clinical and Translational Science Institute certificate program at UCLA Medical Center. \nAn investigator with more than three dozen peer-reviewed publications\, Dr. Cohen leads studies designed to improve the quality of care and outcomes for patients facing gynecologic cancer. He joined City of Hope from the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA\, where he served as gynecologic oncology fellowship program director. Cohen\, M.D.\, is a urologist specializing in complex reconstruction of the pelvic floor\, including fistula and pelvic organ prolapse repair. \nDr. Cohen received his medical doctorate and Bachelor of Arts degrees at Northwestern University through the prestigious Honors Program in Medical Education\, which allowed for direct matriculation into medical school after three years of undergraduate work. Yuan\, whose training includes a fellowship in hematology and medical oncology at New York University Medical Center and a rotation at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York\, received her medical degree in China and holds a PhD in biochemistry and molecular biology from the University of California\, Riverside. Yuan’s research focus is triple-negative breast cancer\, a fast-growing and often aggressive form of the disease. \nTo that end\, Yuan’s research aims to expand the number of triple-negative breast cancer patients who can benefit from immune checkpoint inhibitors–a number that currently stands at just 30 percent. She and her team are testing a novel immunotherapy combination to turn “immune-cold” tumors\, which cannot be penetrated by the body’s immune system\, into “immune-hot” tumors that readily respond to immunotherapies. She is also working closely with the Cedars-Sinai cell therapy team to bring first-in-class immunotherapy treatments to patients with solid tumors\, including breast cancers. Yuan\, who most recently served as medical director of breast cancer immunotherapy at City of Hope\, speaks Mandarin and places patient care front and center. \nDr. Gerber\n \nFor as long as I can remember\, I was on the path to becoming a doctor who specialized in women’s health. My passion has always been to care for and empower women who are going through difficult times. Gynecologic oncology is the perfect field for me because I get to form strong relationships with patients and their families throughout the course of treatment. \nI treat women who have cancer of the reproductive tract\, including endometrial\, ovarian\, cervical\, vaginal\, and vulvar cancer. I also treat women who have been diagnosed with a genetic mutation that increases their risk of gynecologic cancer. To help reduce this risk\, I offer preventive treatments and risk-reducing surgery. \nI specialize in minimally invasive laparoscopic and robotic-assisted surgery\, as well as extensive debulking procedures to remove tumors. After several years of specialized surgical training\, I am comfortable creating optimal surgical plans to remove extensive gynecologic cancers. After surgery\, I form a plan for further treatment or follow-up care based on the diagnosis. \nMy aim is to treat every patient as an individual and each of my patients receives personalized evaluation\, diagnosis\, and treatment. At NYU Langone Hospital–Long Island\, we believe in a holistic approach to treatment which includes collaborating with other specialties and services. I work with a team of gynecologic oncologists\, pathologists\, radiation oncologists\, medical oncologists\, genetic counselors\, physician assistants\, nurses\, social workers\, and radiologists. As part of Perlmutter Cancer Center\, we have a large clinical trial portfolio available to our patients who have gynecologic cancers. These include novel immunotherapy options and targeted therapy combinations. There are always new developments in our field\, and we aim to provide innovative care to all of our patients. \nA cancer diagnosis can lead to fear and confusion. My aim is to alleviate those concerns and pay close attention to each woman’s unique medical\, social\, and psychosocial needs.
