The program will also feature stories from Gabriel Glissmeyer and Sandra Chefitz who will share their own experiences with self-advocacy. In this role\, he actively navigates and advocates for patients across the cancer care continuum — from screening to diagnosis\, treatment\, and survivorship — within an LGBTQ+-proficient framework. He coordinates research and quality improvement projects and contributes to institutional efforts to advance equity and inclusion. Alex chairs the center’s LGBTQ+ Staff and Faculty Task Force and serves on multiple advisory councils across the NYU Langone Health system. His work spans patient advocacy\, staff education\, community engagement (outreach and education)\, and health equity research\, with a focus on social drivers of health in LGBTQ+ communities\, including LGBTQ+ immigrants. He has presented at national and international conferences on LGBTQ+ cancer navigation and health disparities and contributes to several peer-reviewed publications and interdisciplinary studies. Alex holds a Master of Biomedical Sciences from Rutgers University and is dedicated to advancing LGBTQ+ health through research\, education\, and clinical care.\n\nGabriel Glissmeyer\, MPH (He/Him) is a long-time LGBTQ+ health professional with a background in tobacco prevention\, oncology\, and HIV. As a transgender adoptee\, Gabriel has had to navigate a family history of cancer while being confronted with a healthcare system not built for transgender people or adoptees. Fueled by his own adverse experiences with healthcare and public health systems\, he has used this as a springboard to create national programming\, educate healthcare providers and public health workers\, and bring awareness to equity issues.\n\nSandra Chefitz (She/Her) is a VP at Munich Re North America Life. She and her wife\, Marian\, split their time between Brooklyn and Upstate NY.

Shainman is a BRCA1 gene mutation carrier and a previvor. Shainman has shared her BRCA story through various media outlets\, using her voice to raise awareness about hereditary cancer. For the first 30 years of her career\, Kristen traveled the world\, documenting some of the biggest news stories of our time. She reported for NBC Nightly News and NBC’s Today show\, was nominated for an Emmy award for leading the network’s coverage of the Parkland School shooting\, served as a backup anchor for Lester Holt\, and won an Edward R. Murrow award for her feature reporting. In 2019\, she was diagnosed with Breast Cancer and immediately decided to share her story to help other women to recognize the different ways their own cancers could present. Through her reporting\, Kristen also learned about the research that was happening on Breast Cancer vaccines. After a conversation with UW Cancer Vaccine Institute’s Dr. Nora Disis\, Kristen realized that vaccines for breast cancer were no longer a “Pie in the sky” idea but something that was close and achievable. She couldn’t stand by and watch anyone else suffer. CVC is partnered with the nation’s top vaccine and cancer researchers with a goal of getting a safe\, effective breast cancer vaccine to market in 5 to 10 years. CVC has one mission: to move science forward faster. To do so\, CVC works to fund trials\, streamline the process\, remove barriers to success and ensure ALL breast cancer patients are represented in trials. \nDr. Kiran Dhillon has a PhD in Genetics from the University of Washington and then studied chemotherapy resistance in BRCA1/2-associated breast and ovarian cancers at the Fred Hutch Cancer Center. She then joined the Rivkin Center as Director of Scientific Programs\, where she oversaw an international ovarian cancer research grants program\, scientific symposia\, and content for a breast and ovarian cancer education program. Currently\, Dr. Dhillon is the Executive Director at the Cancer Vaccine Institute at the University of Washington\, the largest academic institution devoted to the development of cancer vaccines. As ED she directs the overall strategic program goals and general administration of the Institute to accelerate the development of therapeutic and preventative vaccines for some of the most common and deadly cancers\, including breast and ovarian cancers. \nSusan M. Domchek\, MD is the Basser Professor in Oncology at the Perelman School of Medicine of the University of Pennsylvania. She serves as Executive Director of the Basser Center for BRCA at the Abramson Cancer Center and Director of the Mariann and Robert MacDonald Cancer Risk Evaluation Program. \nHer work focuses on the genetic evaluation and medical management of individuals with inherited risk factors for cancer. Dr. Domchek is particularly interested in developing new cancer therapies\, such as PARP inhibitors\, for breast cancer due to genetic risk factors. \nAn elected member of the National Academy of Medicine\, the American Society of Clinical Investigation\, and the Association of American Physicians\, Dr. Domchek is also a Fellow of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (FASCO). A significant contributor to the oncology literature\, she has authored/co-authored more than 350 articles appearing in scholarly journals including the New England Journal of Medicine\, the Journal of the American Medical Association and the Journal of Clinical Oncology. SUMMARY:Peer Support Training Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Whether you have already enjoyed the rewarding experience of serving as a peer supporter\, are still waiting for your first Sharsheret match\, or are considering becoming a peer supporter\, please join us on Wednesday\, February 28th at 8pm EST/5pm PST for our Peer Support Training Webinar. \nThe interactive training will provide guidelines for serving as a peer supporter\, updates on our program enabling women to be able to speak with others about health care professionals they are considering\, and resources to share with other women facing cancer. This year’s training will include breakout rooms to explore different topics that may come up through role plays. \nAdditionally\, the webinar will offer training on other meaningful ways to get involved in Sharsheret’s outreach and awareness initiatives ranging from social media advocacy to hosting a home event. \n\n\nThis program is made possible\, in part\, by the Cooperative Agreement DP19-1906 of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and \n \n\n  \n  \nRegister here.  \nFor questions\, please contact Rebecca Mendelsberg.

SUMMARY:Kick off Pink Day! Mandala Therapeutic Art Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join Sharsheret and Ariel Landrum\, LMFT for a 60- minute interactive workshop focused on the artform of mandalas. In this workshop\, we will engage in art that aims to both create balance and find uniqueness in each person’s experience.\n\n\nAll you need to participate is some colored pencils\, markers\, etc. \nYou are welcome to have additional materials such as magazine clippings\, scissors and glue (optional). \nAll registrants will receive a PDF of a mandala pattern prior to the webinar. \nRegister here. \n\nFor questions\, please contact Ellen Kleinhaus.\n\nAriel Landrum is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and a Certified Art Therapist. She is a proud Filipina American practicing out of California. She specializes in Narrative Therapy\, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy\, and Art Therapy. She is also a self-identified Geek Therapist\, as she incorporates her client’s passions and fandoms as part of the treatment process. She is licensed in multiple states to provide therapy and regularly conducts mental wellness training for Fortune 500 organizations.\n
