SUMMARY:Beyond Surviving: How Tools from Lifestyle Medicine Can Empower Survivors\, Thrivers\, and Those Living with Cancer
DESCRIPTION:Maya Angelou said\, “My mission in life is not merely to survive\, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion\, some compassion\, some humor\, and some style.” This is a great sentiment to kick off Cancer Survivor Month\, which provides an opportunity to recognize cancer survivors\, thrivers\, and those living with cancer. During this interactive webinar participants will learn how to “thrive” and not just “survive\,” by focusing on the 6 pillars of lifestyle medicine: physical activity\, healthy eating\, restorative sleep\, stress management\, avoidance of risky substances\, and the power of personal connections. Participants will learn how tools from lifestyle medicine can optimize health\, well-being\, and outcome from cancer. Our expert is Dr. Amy Comander\, a breast oncologist and lifestyle medicine expert. \nBonus for our Embrace Community: We invite members of our Embrace community\, those facing metastatic breast or advanced ovarian cancer\, to stay on at the end of the webinar for an intimate breakout session with Dr. Comander and conversation with Bonnie Beckoff\, Director of Support Services. \nDr. Amy Comander is a breast oncologist and lifestyle medicine expert at the Massachusetts General Cancer Center. Dr. Comander is Director of Breast Oncology and Cancer Survivorship at the Mass General Cancer Center in Waltham and at Newton Wellesley Hospital. She is Medical Director of the Mass General Cancer Center in Waltham. She is Director of Lifestyle Medicine at the Mass General Cancer Center and an Instructor in Medicine at Harvard Medical School. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister by clicking here.  \nFor questions\, please contact Melissa Rosen. \nThis webinar is made possible with generous support from: \n \nThe Cooperative Agreement DP19-1906 from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

SUMMARY:Narrative Storytelling for Cancer Thrivers
DESCRIPTION:After a cancer diagnosis\, people navigate both hard-fought victories and stories of pain and loss in their journeys. Learning how to be a careful observer of both beauty and sorrow in literature and art\, and then writing about the experience can help you reflect on the stories that shape your own journey. Join Sharsheret and Kathy Riley\, Cancer Support Community’s Associate Director of Programs\, who is herself a long-time pediatric oncology caregiver and advocate\, for a 60- minute Narrative Medicine workshop. Engaging in this Narrative Storytelling exercise may help you connect more deeply to your own story and the stories of others on a similar path.\n\n\nThe first 35 registrants located in the Los Angeles area will receive a free kit in the mail. Limited supplies available.\n\n\nThis program is for adults in treatment\, survivorship\, or those at increased risk.\n\n\nRegister Here.\n\n\n\n\nFor questions\, please contact Aimee Sax at asax@sharsheret.org. \n\n\nThis webinar is made possible with generous support from: \n        \n  \nThe Cooperative Agreement DP19-1906 from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention \nThank you to our community partner \n \n  \n

SUMMARY:Life\, Love and the BRCA Mutation
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Women’s Healthcare Month with Jessica Queller as she sits down with Rabbi Sherre Hirsch and shares her journey of inheriting the BRCA1 mutation and how it changed her life forever.\n\nRegister for the webinar at this link.\n\nEleven months after her mother succumbs to cancer\, Jessica Queller has herself tested for the BRCA gene mutation. The results come back positive\, putting her at a terrifyingly elevated risk of developing breast cancer before the age of 50 and ovarian cancer in her lifetime. Thirty-four\, unattached\, and yearning for marriage and a family of her own\, Queller faces an agonizing choice: a lifetime of vigilant screenings and a commitment to fight the disease when caught\, or its radical alternative—a prophylactic double mastectomy that would effectively restore life to her\, even as it would challenge her most closely held beliefs about body image\, identity\, and sexuality. In conversation with AJUs Catherine Schneider and Sharsheret’s Jenna Fields\, Jessica offers insights from her journey and shares helpful tools on how to educate yourself\, get tested\, and share this lifesaving information with your loved ones. \nOne in 40 Ashkenazi Jews – both men and women – carries a BRCA gene mutation\, nearly 10 times the rate of the general population\, making Jewish families significantly more susceptible to hereditary breast cancer and ovarian cancer. Recent studies show that Sephardic Jews may also be genetically predisposed to hereditary breast and ovarian cancer. If you or someone in your family has tested BRCA+\, whether you have been diagnosed with breast or ovarian cancer\, Sharsheret can help. \nThis program is delivered in partnership with American Jewish University and Sharsheret.
