SUMMARY:Sleep\, Fatigue and Circadian Rhythms in Cancer: Their effect on quality of life
DESCRIPTION:Sleep disturbances and fatigue are both very common in cancer and get worse during chemotherapy. These symptoms can last for years after the end of treatment. Cancer patients get very little bright light exposure during cancer treatment which is related to increased fatigue and poor sleep.  New research suggests that increased bright light exposure helps fatigue\, sleep\, depression and biological rhythms. This non-invasive treatment has the potential for improving quality of life in cancer patients. Join our webinar and learn more about what this means for you. Featuring Sonia Ancoli-Israel\, Ph.D.\, Professor Emeritus and Professor of Research\, Department of Psychiatry and the Center of Circadian Biology\, UCSD School of Medicine. \n\nBonus for our Embrace Community: We invite members of our Embrace community\, those facing metastatic breast or advanced ovarian cancer\, to stay on at the end of the webinar for an intimate breakout session with Dr. Anocoli-Israel and conversation with Bonnie Bekoff\, Director of Support Services. \n\nClick here to register \n\nSonia Ancoli-Israel\, Ph.D. is a Professor Emeritus and Professor of Research in the Department of Psychiatry and the Center of Circadian Biology at the University of California San Diego (UCSD) School of Medicine. Dr. Ancoli-Israel received her Bachelor’s Degree from the State University of New York\, Stony Brook\, a Master’s Degree in Psychology from California State University\, Long Beach and a Ph.D. in Psychology from the University of California\, San Francisco. Dr. Ancoli-Israel’s expertise is in the field of sleep disorders and circadian rhythms particularly in normal aging and neurogenerative disease\, and in cancer. Her research has included studies on the longitudinal effect of sleep disorders on aging\, therapeutic interventions for sleep problems in dementia\, and in the relationship between sleep\, fatigue\, and circadian rhythms in cancer. Dr. Ancoli-Israel is Past-President of the Sleep Research Society (SRS)\, Past-President of the Society for Light Treatment and Biological Rhythms and was on the founding Executive Board of the National Sleep Foundation.  She was honored in 2007 with the National Sleep Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award and the SRS Mary A. Carskadon Outstanding Educator Award\, in 2012 with Society of Behavioral Sleep Medicine Distinguished Career Award\, in 2014 with the SRS Distinguished Scientist Award and in 2019 with the American Academy of Sleep Medicine William C. SUMMARY:Healing Through Writing: For Cancer Survivors and Those Facing Illness
DESCRIPTION:Sharsheret is partnering with Ritual Well to explore healing through writing. Cancer\, like other forms of serious illness\, is not simply a physical experience\, but also emotional and spiritual. In order to heal from a cancer experience\, we must address all three aspects. The physical healing is directed by our healthcare teams. There are many ways to heal emotionally and spiritually\, but we often find ourselves navigating this on our own. Luckily\, there are many ways we can enhance our healing. This session will focus on writing and ritual as a means of healing\, which has been studied as an effective way to heal from both physical and emotional trauma. Led by Melissa K. Rosen\, two-time cancer survivor\, a member of ADVOT’s first writing cohort\, and the Director of Training and Education at Sharsheret: The Jewish Breast and Ovarian Cancer Community. Additionally\, poets Ann Bookman\, author of Bloodlines\, and Maya Bernstein\, author of There Is No Place Without You\, will share their work. This program is open to all who have been impacted by illness. \nRegister here. \n \n
